The client has a large woodland garden in Lower Hutt and wanted it to be refreshed and given more structure. Eventually the garden will be enclosed in a 30cm high box hedge and the planting at the front of the border will be seen behind the hedge once it matures. 
A refined colour palette of blues, yellows, whites and greens was requested. Because there are a lot of mature bright pink rhododendrons and camellias in the garden, the simpler colour palette has been kept for summer and autumn, when these plants are not flowering.
The existing border has been moved so that it aligns properly with the house, with a large circular area at one end to accommodate the childrens’ trampoline. The area of lawn (for playing cricket) has been maximised.
