Sustainable Garden

WHAT

Semi-rural garden

WHERE

Wellington, New Zealand

WHEN

Work in progress

The clients required a design that connected the various parts of their garden together. The planting needed to suit the local windy conditions and evoke the beauty of the property’s surrounding native bush.

Native plants from the local area enhance the established native trees that already grace the borders of the garden. The native planting increases the habitats for local wildlife, while the natural swimming pool provides an essential water source. Architectural tree ferns enclose the spa area with ground ferns to provide a secluded haven.

Water movement on the property is managed by dense planting, rainwater and grey water collection systems, and a swale to slow the flow of water to stormwater drains. Materials for the design are mainly reused or recycled to minimise waste.
