Contemporary roof terrace
WHAT
City roof garden
WHERE
South-East of England, United Kingdom
WHEN
December 2015
The clients wanted a modern garden, sheltered from the strong winds that swept across the roof terrace, while retaining panoramic views of the city. The space needed to be an exciting area for entertaining and relaxing that incorporated inspiration from their favourite artist, Matisse. The design is based on Matisse's collage work 'The Snail'. The shapes and vibrant colours from the work are featured in rope lighting inlaid in the deck, and in the shapes of planters and furniture.
The new design frames the fantastic views of the city from the house and the terrace. Dynamic planting and lighting provide an exciting outdoor space.
Limited access to the site via a lift and loading restrictions on the roof created design challenges on this project.
The concept of the design is based around 'the Snail' by Matisse. Shapes in the design align with the shapes in Matisse's work, e.g. furniture and planting shapes, lighting design. The roof garden features a glass-sided infinity pool with abstract snail sculpture, a sunbathing deck, a shady reading area beneath a pergola, a dining area next to the house and native New Zealand planting that can handle dry exposed rooftop conditions.
